Ontario surgeries have better outcomes on Mondays than Fridays, study finds

The 'weekend effect' means a group of 1,000 patients could result in 8 more cases of complications for those treated on a Friday



An Ontario study of over 400,000 patients found that surgeries performed on Fridays had a higher risk of negative outcomes (death, readmission, complications, longer hospital stay) compared to those on Mondays, both at 30 days and one year post-surgery. This "weekend effect" was most pronounced in elective surgeries.
