Paradox: Firmele care au primi bani de la stat prin programul Start
The Start-Up Nation program, which provided state funding to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Romania, faced criticism due to weaker business results among funded companies compared to their unfunded competitors. The Competition Council analyzed the program's 2017 and 2018 editions and found that while it helped maintain companies on the market and reduce bankruptcy risks, it did not significantly improve business performance. The program granted 15,242 subsidies totaling 2.89 billion lei, with 420 million lei coming from EU funds. The council recommended setting clear, measurable objectives for future iterations. Despite challenges, the program continued in 2022 and 2024, though the council suggested reviewing or suspending 2022 funding to prevent overlap.
