Brian Molko, frontman of the band Placebo, has been charged with defamation after allegedly calling Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a “piece of shit, fascist, racist” during a 2023 performance in Turin. Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, filed a lawsuit against Molko in August 2023. Prosecutors have charged Molko with “contempt of the institutions,” though he is unlikely to face prison time. Meloni’s government has been criticized for filing numerous defamation lawsuits against public intellectuals.
