A police officer and a suspect were killed in a shootout at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, after the suspect took staff members hostage. The suspect, identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, 49, entered the intensive care unit armed with a pistol and zip ties, taking a female staff member hostage. Police responded, and gunfire erupted, resulting in the deaths of both the suspect and the officer. The officer who died, Andrew Duarte, was a veteran with the West York Borough Police Department and had previously served with the Denver Police Department.
