Police search for woman who escaped Panama hotel where US deportees are being held

Panama City police are searching for Zheng Lijuan, a Chinese woman who escaped from a downtown hotel where she was being held after being deported from the US under former President Donald Trump's immigration policies. Zheng was among 299 migrants, including those from China, Afghanistan, and Iran, who were flown to Panama in shackles since last Wednesday. Panamanian authorities believe she was aided by locals. Meanwhile, 170 of the deported migrants were transported to the lawless Darién region near Colombia. Panama plans to expand a migrant camp due to the influx. The country has faced political pressure from Trump to cooperate with US deportation efforts, despite lacking extradition agreements with some countries. Some migrants, like Iranian Christian Artemis Ghasemzadeh, fear severe consequences if deported.
