Port of Vancouver reaches record cargo volumes in 2024 as crude oil exports surge

Nearly 470,000 vehicle imports -- another record -- rolled onto the docks last year in a three per cent increase driven by Canadians' appetite for new cars.

In 2024, the Port of Vancouver achieved record cargo volumes, reaching 158 million tonnes, a 5% year-over-year increase. This growth was largely driven by a 527% surge in crude oil exports following the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Container traffic also rose 11% to pre-pandemic levels, led by household goods and construction materials. Vehicle imports reached a record, increasing by 3%. Cruise ship passenger numbers also hit a record with 1.33 million. However, log exports, mineral shipments, wheat volumes and coal exports declined.
