Proposal to remove UN approval from 'Triple Lock' to be brought to Cabinet this week

Members of the opposition have taken a firm stance against the measure.

The Irish government is proposing to remove the UN Security Council's approval requirement from its "Triple Lock" system for deploying troops abroad. The proposal, to be brought before Cabinet this week by Tánaiste Simon Harris, also seeks to increase the number of troops deployable without prior approval from 12 to 50. The opposition has voiced strong objections, while Harris argues the change is necessary due to shifting geopolitical tensions and potential vetoes from nations like Russia. Harris also suggested that Ireland will be replacing the "Triple Lock" with a "Double Lock" and the UN Charter will be enshrined in the legislation replacing current laws.
