Proposed new law to tackle cronyism in Lords ‘would enhance public trust’

The House of Lords (Peerage Nominations) Bill would restrain the Prime Minister’s power in appointing members of the upper chamber.

A proposed House of Lords (Peerage Nominations) Bill aims to curb cronyism and increase public trust by giving the House of Lords Appointments Commission (Holac) statutory power to block unsuitable nominations based on "conspicuous merit" and capacity to contribute. The Prime Minister would be bound by Holac's advice, and nominations would require justification, increasing transparency and preventing appointments based solely on party donation. While some support the Bill for improving the Lords' perception and ensuring qualified members, others fear it would create an unaccountable, biased body. The government acknowledges the need for Lords reform and has committed to improving the quality and balance of appointments. The Bill has passed its second reading in the House of Lords.
