Following the imprisonment of opposition politician Ekrem Imamoglu in Turkey, over 1100 protesters have been arrested. President Erdogan has condemned the largely peaceful demonstrations as violent, claiming protesters used stones, sticks, acids, and axes. The media union Disk-Basin-Is and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) have criticized the government's response, citing attacks on journalists and restrictions on press freedom. At least ten journalists have been physically assaulted and many more attacked with tear gas and rubber bullets. Demonstrators have reported the use of plastic bullets.
