A North Korean couple vanished after questioning the death of their soldier son, who was banished to a labor camp for allegedly disrespecting Kim Jong-un during a September 2024 visit to a special forces training site. Twenty soldiers were sent to the camp for "dishonorable behavior" and some families sought answers when the military claimed their sons died. This has caused anxiety among the public and soldiers, fearing family repercussions for minor mistakes. Some speculate the soldiers were scapegoated or sent to fight in Ukraine, where captured soldiers face family punishment.
