ROARING LION: Thief who stole Winston Churchill portrait pleads guilty

Jeffrey Wood, 44, took the portrait sometime between Dec. 25, 2021, and Jan. 6, 2022, and replaced it with a fake copy.

Jeffrey Wood pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000, forgery, and trafficking for stealing the "Roaring Lion" portrait of Winston Churchill from the Château Laurier. The portrait was replaced with a fake, and the theft went unnoticed for months. Police investigation revealed Wood contacted an auction house claiming he acquired the original portrait from the Karsh estate and sold it to an Italian lawyer who cooperated with the authorities to return the artwork.
