Russian politician had his children's £40,000 UK private school fees paid for by his brother

A Russian politician, Dmitrii Ovsiannikov, is accused of breaching UK sanctions by receiving funds from his brother-in-law, Alexei Owsjanikow, and his wife to pay for his children's £40,000 private school fees at Royal Russell School in Surrey. Ovsiannikov was a designated person under UK sanctions due to his former role as a Putin-appointed governor in occupied Crimea. The prosecution alleges Owsjanikow circumvented restrictions by making payments to Ovsiannikov's bank account and directly to the school. Owsjanikow also provided a debit card to Ovsiannikov. Ovsiannikov applied for a UK passport in August 2022.
