The death toll from self-inflicted deaths among prisoners serving abolished Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) jail terms has reached 94. These indefinite sentences, abolished in 2012 but not retrospectively, have been described as "psychological torture" and an "industrial-scale miscarriage of justice," with many prisoners remaining incarcerated long after their minimum terms, sometimes for minor crimes. Despite calls for re-sentencing from various organizations, the government has resisted, citing concerns about public safety.
