Scandal of the sick: Ill and disabled benefit claimants die waiting for vital payments
Over 1,000 sick and disabled Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit claimants died while waiting for payments between November 2023 and October 2024, amidst plans to cut the welfare bill by up to £5 billion. Approximately 900,000 people applied for PIP during this period. Delays in the under-pressure system have been criticised, with unions, campaigners, and MPs warning that planned cuts risk worsening the situation. One man has been waiting since June 2022 and a reassessment was ruled by a tribunal in August 2024 but he is still waiting to be seen. The DWP asserts its priority is to ensure people receive benefits quickly.
