Investigative journalist Christo Grozev, known for exposing Russian intelligence operatives including those involved in the Alexei Navalny poisoning, was warned by US authorities in February 2023 of a potential threat in Vienna and did not return home. A Bulgarian spy ring, linked to fugitive Wirecard CEO Jan Marsalek and believed to be working for Russian intelligence, surveilled Grozev and his colleague Roman Dobrokhotov.
