Three Bulgarian nationals guilty of spying for Russia in the UK

Russian proxy spy ring facing years behind bars for one of the ‘largest and most complex’ enemy operations to be uncovered on UK soil

Three Bulgarian nationals, Orlin Roussev, Biser Dzhambazov, and Ivan Stoyanov, have been convicted of spying for Russia in the UK. Their espionage activities, spanning nearly three years, targeted journalists, Russian dissidents, and individuals with ties to countries friendly to Russia. The group, believed to be directed by a suspected Russian spy handler, aimed to gather intelligence for Russia, an enemy of the UK. They possessed extensive surveillance equipment, including mobile phones, hard drives, recording devices, and drones. Their operations included plans for a Novichok-style attack and efforts to bolster Russia’s ties with Kazakhstan. The convictions highlight the scale of Russian espionage activities on UK soil.
