Scotland's Justice Secretary vows death in custody families guaranteed free legal aid

The families of Katie Allan, 21, and William Brown met with Angela Constance.

Scotland's Justice Secretary pledged free legal aid for families involved in Fatal Accident Inquiries (FAIs) regarding deaths in custody, effective April 7, while awaiting new legislation. This follows the deaths of Katie Allan and William Brown at Polmont Young Offenders Institution. The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is implementing FAI recommendations, including removing bunk beds and overhauling its suicide prevention strategy with expert input. The government is also working on information sharing between courts and prisons, and an independent review of the FAI system is underway.
