Tensions between the two nations have been strained since former US Ambassador Reuben Brigety accused South Africa of supplying weapons to Russia during the Ukraine war, a claim later found to lack evidence. President Cyril Ramaphosa criticized AfriForum and Solidarity for meeting with Trump administration officials, while the US opposes South Africa's Expropriation Act and its decision to involve Israel in the International Court of Justice. The US has also halted aid to South Africa in response to land reform policies.
