Shocking figures reveal UK spends double the defence budget on working age benefits

Analysis by The Independent has revealed the scale of Britain’s welfare bill to the taxpayer

The UK spends £117.6bn on working-age benefits (4.5% of GDP, 9.2% of government budget), more than double its £56.4bn defence budget and also exceeding the education budget (£116bn). Approximately 9.9 million people (14.5% of the population) claim benefits, including 939,365 aged 16-24. Potential cuts to disability benefits by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer have drawn criticism, with calls for welfare reform or a wealth tax as alternatives.
