Sightsavers urges urgent action to boost women’s access to employment

Sightsavers has called for urgent action to improve women's access to employment, particularly for those with disabilities, to address financial independence barriers. Highlighting International Women’s Day and upcoming global meetings, Sightsavers noted that closing the gender employment gap could increase Nigeria’s GDP per capita by 8.4%, from USD 1,596 to USD 1,730. A World Bank report warns that failing to close this gap could cost some countries up to 20% of their potential income. Joy Shu’aibu, Sightsavers Country Director, emphasized that Nigeria’s gender gap in employment stands at 8.4%. Barriers such as lack of resources and workplace exclusion prevent many women, especially those with disabilities, from accessing economic opportunities. Sightsavers works to empower women, including through programs like the IT Bridge Academy, which helps young people with disabilities gain digital skills.
