South Carolina is set for the first U.S. firing squad execution in 15 years

Death row inmate convicted of the double murder of David and Gladys Larke has chosen to die by firing squad over fears the electric chair would ‘burn and cook him alive’

South Carolina is scheduled to execute 67-year-old Sigmon by firing squad on March 7, 2024. Sigmon opted for this method to avoid the electric chair, fearing a painful death. This will be the first U.S. firing squad execution since 2010. Sigmon, who would be the oldest executed in South Carolina, was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend's parents in 2001. He avoided the electric chair in 2021 when firing squad became an option. The South Carolina Supreme Court resumed executions in 2023 after a 13-year hiatus. Sigmon's lawyers seek a stay, arguing he's forced into a violent death. Sigmon has a history of mental health and drug issues.
