Following an attack on a UN helicopter in South Sudan that killed a crew member and injured two others during a rescue mission, President Salva Kiir appealed for calm and assured the nation would not return to war. The UN mission (UNMISS) reported the attack may constitute a war crime and stated the mission was attempting to extract South Sudanese army members when fired upon. The incident follows recent clashes between forces allied with Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar, threatening their fragile power-sharing agreement.
