Statue of women’s rights pioneer Emily Murphy stolen from Edmonton park

Emily Murphy was Alberta's first female judge and one of the so-called Famous Five women behind the 1929 Persons Case.

A life-sized bronze statue of women's rights pioneer Emily Murphy, a Canadian trailblazer and one of the Famous Five behind the 1929 Persons Case, has been stolen from a park in Edmonton. The statue, installed in 1992 and recently appraised at around $250,000, was reportedly cut off at the ankles with a power tool. Only the shoes remain. Emily Murphy, while celebrated for her contributions to women's rights, was also a controversial figure due to her support for racist policies and eugenics. The statue had previously been defaced in 2020 with red paint and the word "racist" written across it. Edmonton police are investigating the theft.
