Study: Climate change will reduce the number of satellites that can safely orbit in space

Increasing greenhouse gas emissions will reduce the atmosphere’s ability to burn up old space junk, MIT scientists report.

An MIT study published in Nature Sustainability finds that increasing greenhouse gas emissions are causing the Earth's upper atmosphere to contract, reducing atmospheric drag and extending the lifespan of space junk. This will reduce the satellite carrying capacity of low Earth orbit by 50-66% by 2100, increasing the risk of collisions and debris.
