Supermarket giants shrink price match promises as food costs rise

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's told This is Money on Wednesday that, as of today, the number of items covered in the Aldi Price Match scheme was 606.

Sainsbury's and Tesco have reduced the number of products included in their Aldi Price Match schemes, with Sainsbury's cutting its range from 681 to 566 items since November 2024, and Tesco reducing its offering from 790 to 645 items. Meanwhile, Asda has discontinued its Aldi and Lidl price match initiative. Food inflation reached 3.3% in January, the highest rate since March 2024, with meat, bread, and cereals contributing significantly to price increases. Experts warn of further rises due to higher labor costs, National Minimum Wage hikes, and National Insurance Contributions set to take effect in April. Balwinder Dhoot of The Food and Drink Federation urged the government to simplify regulations and reduce business costs to help consumers. Sarah Coles of Hargreaves Lansdown highlighted the likelihood of continued food price increases, while Nicholas Hyett of Wealth Club noted that higher food and fuel costs, alongside council tax hikes, will exacerbate financial pressure on households.
