Supreme Court Declines to Weigh In on Abortion Clinic Buffer Zones

The Supreme Court declined to review two cases challenging buffer zones around abortion clinics, which restrict pro-life activists from approaching individuals entering such facilities. The cases involved buffer zones in Carbondale, Illinois, and Englewood, New Jersey, and were brought by a nonprofit organization and an individual sidewalk counselor. Lower courts upheld these zones under the 2000 precedent Hill v. Colorado. Pro-life groups hoped the Court would revisit this precedent, particularly after the 2022 Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Justice Thomas noted confusion about the precedent and the need for clarification, though the Court had previously declined to revisit Hill in 2023. The nonprofit, Coalition for Life, plans to continue its work despite the denial.
