Supreme Court orders CDMX zoo to improve conditions for Ely the elephant

The Mexican Supreme Court ruled that the CDMX zoo must improve living conditions for Ely, an African elephant rescued from a circus 13 years ago. The court ordered the zoo to provide veterinary care, environmental enrichment, and adequate living space. Ely has been in poor condition since her companion Maggie died in 2016, showing signs of depression. While the court did not find evidence of abuse, it upheld a lower court's decision. The zoo has made improvements, including adding two more elephants, under public pressure. Ely's lawyer highlighted the ruling as a significant precedent for animal rights. The zoo's director believes they can meet the court's requirements and claims Ely is stable.
