Tariffs and political tensions are causing fewer Americans to visit Canada

Canada has seen a slight dip in visitors from the U.S. as tensions between the two countries heighten due to tariffs and Donald Trump's presidency.Statistics Canada released its report on travel between Canada and other countries in February. It found that trips to Canada by Americans decreased by 5.3 per cent compared to the same time last year, to 1.1 million visitors."This marked the first year-over-year decrease in arrivals to Canada by U.S. residents since March 2021," reads the report. "Most of the trips taken in February 2025 by U.S. residents were made by automobile (72.8 per cent) or by air (24.2 per cent)."Americans visiting by car were down 6.5 per cent in February 2025 compared to 2024, which StatCan says marked the end of four consecutive months of year-over-year growth that began in October 2024.
