This Ottawa group is building community, one sea shanty at a time

“There are so many positive health benefits of singing in a group together, and really so few opportunities to do that,” Fletcher Gailey-Snell said. “All you have to do is show up early, get a lyric book, read the lyrics up on the projector, and we’ll teach you everything.”

The Bytown Sea Shanty Collective in Ottawa is fostering community through monthly singalongs at a local brewery. Hundreds gather to sing traditional sea shanties, led by the four-man group and often featuring guest leaders from the crowd. The events offer a free, accessible, and communal singing experience, attracting both maritime expats and new enthusiasts.
