Tiny bird found using fake ‘hawk’ calls to scare away threats

Alarm calls create illusion of hawk's presence and scare away predator, researchers say

Australian brown thornbills use deceptive alarm calls, mimicking other birds' hawk alarm choruses, to scare predators like pied currawongs away from their nests. This tactic exploits the currawongs' fear of hawks, giving thornbill chicks a chance to escape. Researchers found this is the first experimental demonstration of birds using deceptive alarm calls to fool nest predators.
