In December 2024, the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) shared findings from its "Project Saaremaa" investigation with the US intelligence agencies, suggesting with '80 to 95 percent certainty' that COVID-19 originated from a lab leak in Wuhan, China. The BND targeted Chinese government agencies and scientific institutions, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and found evidence of early and extensive knowledge of the virus by Chinese scientists.
