Trump Effect: E.U. Leaders Agree to Massive Defence Spending Boost

European Union leaders, responding to President Donald Trump's calls for greater self-reliance, agreed during emergency talks in Brussels to significantly increase defense spending. This decision reflects a shift in geopolitical strategy, with Trump urging European nations to fund their own military needs. The leaders loosened budget restrictions to allow willing countries to boost their defense budgets and instructed the European Commission to explore ways to facilitate increased defense spending across all member states. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a Trump ally, opposed a portion of the summit's statement regarding Ukraine. Trump has previously criticized the financial burden of the war in Ukraine on the U.S. and has pressed NATO members to meet the target of spending 5% of their GDP on defense.
