Trump says steel, aluminum tariffs will soar after Ontario electricity tax

According to the Aluminum Association of Canada, the United States relies on Canada for 75 per cent of its imported primary aluminum.

After initially threatening to raise tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50% in response to Ontario's electricity tariff on U.S. imports, President Trump decided to maintain the existing 25% tariff following Ontario Premier Doug Ford's decision to remove the electricity surcharge. Trump praised Ford, while the White House stated Trump used economic leverage to secure a win for America. The 25% tariff on steel and aluminum will still take effect, impacting Canada and other trading partners.
