Trump’s Dept. of Education Says Maine Violated Title IX by Allowing Males on Female Sports Teams

The Department of Education determined that Maine violated Title IX by allowing males to compete on female sports teams. This determination stems from a transgender-identifying boy winning a girls' track and field championship. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) demanded Maine revise its policies to comply with Title IX or risk losing federal funding. Maine officials initially defied Trump's order barring males from female sports but now must direct all school districts to comply. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) also found violations by the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principals’ Association, and Greely High School. The Maine Principals’ Association is pushing back, citing state law protecting gender identity and challenging HHS's jurisdiction.
