Trump’s trade war ‘blows a complete hole’ in CUSMA, architects say

The Canadian and Mexican architects of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement say Donald Trump's trade war has crossed a line that essentially wipes out the continental trade pact.

Architects of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) state that Donald Trump's trade war, specifically the imposition of tariffs, undermines the trade agreement. Prime Minister Trudeau suggests Trump seeks to weaken the Canadian economy, while Canada plans to challenge the tariffs through the WTO and CUSMA. The architects, along with a Republican and a law firm, formed the Coalition for North American Trade to promote the agreement's benefits, which they say are challenged by Trump's tariffs. Mexico seeks to separate trade from border concerns. The 2026 CUSMA review could lead to renegotiation.
