UK Government could send migrants to Balkans and 'lock them up' in detention centres

Plans are being considered around whether or not to deport failed asylum seekers to the Balkans and 'lock them up' in ‘detention centres’ after ditching the Rwanda scheme

The UK government is considering deporting failed asylum seekers to detention centers in the Balkans, potentially including Albania, Serbia, Bosnia, and North Macedonia. This plan, possibly modeled after an Italian scheme, involves the UK paying Balkan countries to house rejected asylum seekers, including those from Afghanistan and Iran. The number of migrants crossing the Channel has exceeded 5,000 this year, a 24% increase from last year.
