UKHSA says virus spreading like wildfire in UK 'can be caught twice'

Cases are soaring forcing closures of hospital wards as people told to isolate for two days

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning about a severe norovirus outbreak in the UK, noting a significant increase in cases. The virus has mutated, enabling individuals to be reinfected. From February 3 to 16, 2025, cases rose by 29.4% compared to the preceding two weeks. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, with higher risks for severe outcomes in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals. The UKHSA recommends avoiding food preparation while infected, emphasizes handwashing with soap and water, and suggests using bleach-based cleaners to prevent spread, as alcohol gels are ineffective.
