The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) has launched an investigation into the University of California (UC) system, focusing on allegations of antisemitism tied to campus protests supporting Palestine during the Gaza war. The probe aims to determine if the UC violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by fostering a hostile work environment for Jewish faculty and staff. Protests, which began at Columbia University after Hamas' October 2023 attacks on Israel, spread nationwide, including violent clashes at UCLA. The DoJ emphasized its commitment to protecting Jewish Americans and combating institutional antisemitism. Previously, the U.S. Department of Education investigated nine complaints against UC schools, leading to an agreement for enhanced training on addressing harassment. The protests, some of the largest since the 1960s, also sparked similar demonstrations globally.
