In 2024, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) had the highest number of traffic fatalities per capita in Germany, with 59 deaths per million residents. The total number of traffic accidents in MV decreased by 530 compared to 2023, totaling 55,108. Nationally, traffic fatalities dropped by 2% to 2,780. Insufficient following distance and excessive speed were major causes of accidents. Severe and minor injuries remained similar to 2023 levels. In January 2025, police in MV intensified checks to prevent accidents caused by traffic violations and vehicle defects. Despite increased use of driver assistance systems, traffic fatalities rose in MV.
