Friedrich Merz, the CDU leader, has criticized the federal programs for admitting Afghans as "rather absurd," following attacks by Afghan refugees. Despite this, the programs are underutilized, with only 94 Afghans admitted in 2023 compared to 1078 in 2022. Approximately 4131 Afghans remain in the pipeline, particularly in Pakistan, where they face expulsion. A recent flight in March 2024 brought 155 Afghans to Berlin, yet the programs' continuation remains uncertain, as the decision will fall to the next government post-election.
