Welfare cuts will be managed in ‘compassionate way’, says minister

Sir Stephen Timms was seeking to reassure MPs who continue to express concerns over the impact of the welfare cuts on tens of thousands of people.



Work and pensions minister Sir Stephen Timms assured MPs that upcoming welfare cuts, particularly to Personal Independence Payments (PIP), will be implemented compassionately and in a managed way, despite concerns raised by Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs regarding the impact on tens of thousands of people, including carers. The changes will not take effect until November 2026 and will only affect current PIP recipients upon their first award review after that date.
