What is Listeria? Symptoms and causes of deadly bacteria linked to hospital ice cream deaths

UK Health Security Agency and Food Standards Agency investigating cases linked to the same strain of listeria infection

A Listeria outbreak, linked to hospital ice cream deaths and traced to mousses served in hospitals and care homes, is under investigation by the UK Health Security Agency and Food Standards Agency. Listeria is a bacteria causing listeriosis, often contracted from chilled, ready-to-eat foods like unpasteurized milk, cold cuts, smoked fish, certain cheeses, and pre-prepared sandwiches. Symptoms are often mild or absent, but can include fever, aches, chills, nausea, and diarrhea; pregnant women and babies face additional risks. The bacteria was detected in Cool Delight Desserts mousse during routine testing.
