The head of the World Bank said he asked the lender’s board to reverse its long-standing policy against funding nuclear power projects, saying the technology offers a green option for poor countries.
World Bank President Ajay Banga has requested the board to consider reversing its ban on funding nuclear power projects, citing it as a green energy option for developing countries. The board is willing to discuss the change, which may be included in an energy policy proposal expected in June 2026. Several developing nations, especially in Southeast Asia, are showing increased interest in nuclear power. The proposed policy reform would encompass various affordable and accessible energy sources, including natural gas, nuclear, geothermal, and hydropower.
