Today officially marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which recognizes the ongoing trauma caused by residential schools in Canada, reflecting on the children who never returned home, Survivors, their families, and communities. The holiday was officially proposed back in 2015 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, which, under Action 80, called upon the federal government (in collaboration with Indigenous peoples) to establish a statutory holiday to ensure that "public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process." Sept. 30 is also known as Orange Shirt Day, which was established in 2013 and honours Phyllis' story, whose new orange shirt was taken on her first day at a residential school when she was only six years old.
