The largest iceberg in the world, A23a, which broke off from Antarctica in 1986, is now grounded about 70 kilometers off South Georgia. Measuring 3360 square kilometers, it's 4.5 times Berlin's size. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) provided a photo. Its grounding near the biodiversity hotspot may have averted a collision that could have disrupted local wildlife, affecting penguins and seals. While the immediate threat is avoided, ecological impacts, such as nutrient upwelling, are being monitored by scientists.
