Are fewer people really speaking Welsh? We look beyond the numbers at the future of the language

Wales aims to have one million Welsh speakers by 2050. The 2021 census reported 538,000 Welsh speakers (17.8% of the population), while a 2024 survey suggested over 850,000. While census data shows an overall decline, some areas, like Cardiff suburbs, have seen increases, possibly due to migration and growth in Welsh-medium education.
