British motorcycling couple detained in Iran charged with espionage

Lindsay and Craig Foreman, a British couple in their early 50s, were detained in Iran and charged with espionage after entering the country from Armenia on December 30 as part of a motorbike trip. Their last Facebook post, from Isfahan on January 3, praised Iran as a "wonderful place." The Iranian judiciary's Mizan news agency confirmed the charges, which carry penalties ranging from two years in jail to the death penalty, according to Amnesty International. Since 2010, Iran has detained at least 66 foreign nationals, often for politically motivated reasons, as noted by Human Rights Watch. Recent US sanctions have increased pressure on the UK and Europe to distance themselves from Iran. The UK government advises against travel to Iran due to the risk of detention, even for British nationals. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian dual national, was previously detained on espionage charges, a case the UK criticized as diplomatic leverage. The UK is engaging with Iranian authorities to address the Foremans' case.
