The couple, on a round-the-world motorcycle trip for a psychology research project, were arrested in Iran after crossing from Armenia. Iranian authorities allege they were collecting information, a claim Kearns dismissed as implausible, suggesting they may have been taken hostage for geopolitical leverage. Iran has a history of detaining foreign nationals, with 66 cases between 2010 and 2022. The UK government remains uncertain about the exact reasons behind their detention.
