Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja has emphasized the importance of retaining the current energy compensation and capping scheme to protect consumers amidst ongoing instability. This scheme has maintained Romania's position as having some of the lowest energy prices in the EU. Rising gas prices have driven up electricity costs, as gas often determines the marginal production price. Burduja highlighted the necessity of maintaining price control to prevent further increases, especially with the start of gas storage refilling post-winter. The government intends to extend the scheme, particularly for gas, and introduce vouchers for vulnerable consumers. A draft regulation detailing post-April 1st measures will be published on March 1st, 2025.
