Calgary firefighters called out to early Friday morning condo fire

Residents of a four-storey, 72-unit condo complex in Copperfield were forced from their homes on Friday by an early morning fire.

An early morning fire at a 72-unit condo complex in southeast Calgary's Copperfield community forced residents to evacuate. The fire, reported around 3:10 a.m. on Friday in the 99 block of Copperstone Park, was caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette in a planter pot. Sprinklers and quick action by a building occupant who called 911 helped contain the fire, limiting damage to the building's exterior. Residents were allowed back in after firefighters ensured no carbon monoxide was present.
